Who is Roy Flora?
Roy Flora is originally from Manvel, TX. His family had a small ranching operation of about 100 mother cows. His oldest brother managed a ranch that at one time ran over 4000 head of mother cows. Each of these operations from time to time required the use of horses. Gathering and moving cattle, checking fences and pastures were routine tasks on the ranch, no matter how big or how small.
Being raised around livestock and having a ranching background, majoring in Agricultural Education and pursuing a career as an Ag Science instructor seemed all too natural when it came time to go to college. While attending and after graduating Texas A&M University in 1986, working on a few more ranches added to a love of being outdoors while working and handling livestock.
Getting to live the dream- Part I
After a tour in the US Army and 8 years of teaching high school ag and shop classes, thirteen years after graduating from college, the Good Lord made it possible for me to own my own farm and business. For over three years I was able to be self employed as I had a commercial turkey farm, producing in the neighborhood of 65,000 turkeys a year, run 30-40 mother cows and produce my own hay crop. Horses again got to become a small portion of my life again.
Then as some business dealings went bad, we had to file bankruptcy and lost practically everything, including the horses. Having to fall back on my education, I found myself teaching again. After a few rough years of getting back on our feet, I was finally able to get another horse, but all I was able to afford was an unbroke 4 year bay gelding that a lady had at a horse auction.
All those years growing up and doing ranch work, I had never started a colt or a horse from the beginning! I was not a bronc buster, and surely was not(nor am I now) a rodeo star. As I began studying and following the many methods of natural horsemanship, I finally decided that I needed to choose on and follow that program.
Living the dream- Part II
Drawing upon information from several horsemen seen on TV and in magazines, I started my little bay gelding, broke him to ride, and even did a few simple maneuvers. But I knew there was much, much more horsemanship, and knew I was only going get the desired results from one man I had been watching, taking notes from and was eagerly awaiting the day I could get meet and ride with him. Dennis Reis then introduced his endorsement process and instructor program, and it was all I could do to get the material, then go to the tour stops to ride with and learn from the master horseman himself. I currently have 12 endorsements and do not regret any moment of it one bit, and am patiently going through process so that I can be an instructor for Dennis ans share with others the "better way" that has been shared with me.
